About Jennifer

Jennifer Sanford is the Managing Director of Open Door Communications. As an expert in media relations and crisis communications, Jennifer helps organizations raise their profile through strategic planning, storytelling, and grassroots communication efforts. Jennifer’s former employers include the Government of Alberta, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Mount Royal University. At 28, Jennifer was appointed as the national media spokesperson for WestJet airlines, responsible for the public’s trust and confidence of Canada’s distinct, award-winning brand. As a board-certified leadership coach, Jennifer supports the cultivation of audience-centric, adaptive, and responsive communications. She believes in messaging that puts the organization and its people first; selling the best ideas from the inside out.

In 2013, Jennifer launched Open Door Communications, specializing in engagement-oriented communications work. A natural fit with crisis communication, Jennifer has championed the creation of impactful communication models to serve the needs of homeless populations, individuals with low literacy, those with developmental disabilities, senior citizens, and indigenous wildlife in emergency situations. Jennifer is an active member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and has a Accredited Business Continuity Professional (ABCP) designation through the Disaster Recovery Institute of Canada.

Jennifer holds a Masters of Political Communication from John Hopkins University in Washington, DC. She was one of the first Canadians to earn the Communications Management Professional (CMP) designation from the International Association of Business Communicators. As a dynamic (and certified) facilitator, she's known as a communicator that makes things happen.

In addition to her consulting work, Jennifer can be found in college classrooms teaching the future of communications to a new generation of communicators. She is currently working on her first academic manuscript on the role of propaganda in the social media space.
